AK JANSEN

Ak Jansen was born in the Netherlands, and currently based in Brooklyn.  His work lives at the intersections of craft, design and art; it’s rooted in the histories of hand-making that straddle the line. He works primarily with clay and with fabric – humble materials that accompany human life wherever human life is found. Clay and cotton have an intimate relationship with our hands and Ak’s sculptural lighting pieces transform these common materials to tell our stories.  In the collection Golden Hour, Ak plays with the relationships between repeated elements in each unique piece creating a dynamic language of form, proportion, and color.  Ak’s first pendant series made for Bilotta’s La Dolce Estate presents an exciting new format for the evolution of this sculptural language.  All pieces are custom made to order as individual fixtures or combined in custom canopy arrangements.

Jansen holds a BFA from the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands and a MFA in sculpture from Brooklyn College NY. Recent exhibitions include a solo show, WE’RE HERE, at Ivy Brown Gallery; group shows at 601 Artspace, South Etna, and Tchotchke Gallery.
